Archery rules - what do I have to pay attention to?

In our checklist for beginners you could already learn that the protective equipment in archery is important. But in addition to that, there are many rules in archery that need to be followed when practicing the sport. In this blog post, we'll give you a checklist that you can use to protect not only yourself, but especially those around you.

Our BEARPAW checklist: What do I need to watch out for?

Although bows and arrows are not weapons according to German law and are classified as sports equipment, there are still a few safety aspects to consider:

• First, we advise you to only go archery where it is also intended and legally allowed. For this purpose, use parcours or arenas in your area. By the way, we are always happy to welcome you to one of our BEARPAW COUNTRY parcours. If you are placing targets at home on your property or in an open field, be sure to have an back stop netting before the first shot.
• Especially important for archers on parcours, place your bow visibly and clearly in front of your target if, for example, you are looking for an arrow behind your target and are not immediately obvious to others. This way, other archers know that there is another person there and the field of fire is not cleared.
• Check your equipment before use - it should be in perfect condition. In particular, make sure that neither the bow nor the string are damaged. If you have a take down bow, you should also check that it is assembled correctly. Check out our blog to learn how to properly care for and inspect your bow on a regular basis.
• Don't nock your arrow until you are 100% sure that no one is in front of you or in your line of fire. Only when everyone present is behind the archer can you prepare for your shot and nock the arrow.
• Basically, an arrow should never be shot upside down into the open sky. Doing so creates a great danger of being hit not only for yourself, but also for third parties (both humans and animals).
• Avoid empty shot! Never draw your string without an arrow and then let go. This can damage the bow.
• When you pull the arrows out of the target or 3D animal, stand to the side of the target and not behind it. This way you avoid hurting yourself when you pull them out.
• If you are traveling in a group, always make sure that you agree together when everyone's arrows will be retrieved. This will help you avoid dangerous actions due to rash actions.
• Children and young people should always be supervised by their parents or another supervisor during archery.

When you are out on a course, there are usually guidelines and rules posted there that every archer must follow. However, find out in advance what additional rules you must follow on the course you are visiting.
